Just how complex it is to extend and refurbish a hospital without disrupting patient care is demonstrated at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
The two year phased project involved the refurbishment of the hospital’s south wing, forming part of the former Florence Nightingale Hospital. The programme allowed for the relocation of two hospitals from elsewhere in London into upgraded and extended existing facilities; St John’s Skin Hospital, Soho, and the former Seaman’s Hospital, Greenwich.
The work included the construction of a new highly specialised 16-bed unit to provide facilities for iron-lung patients. The development, known as the Lane Fox unit included both the construction of a single storey building together with alterations to the ground floor.
