The phenomenal growth rate of passenger traffic since completion of Shenzhen Terminal 2 in 2002 led to further development at Shenzhen Baoan Airport. The prediction that passenger traffic would exceed 60 million by 2035 led to Llewelyn Davies receiving another invitation from the Shenzhen Airport Group Company to participate in a limited international design competition. Our scheme design proposal is a departure from the prescriptive ‘International’ airport style; it provided Shenzhen Baoan International Airport with an innovative, symbolic design solutions that is a rethink of what an airport terminal should be and be instantly recognisable as Shenzhen.
